Old Rip Van Winkle 10-Year Bourbon is the youngest wheated Bourbon and the youngest whisky in the Van Winkle Line. It has been aged for 10 years.

It’s 107 proof and produced with Weller’s wheat malt. This Van Winkle whisky is similar to Weller Antique 107 (10 years old), except it was selected from fewer barrels. Old Rip Van Winkle’s 10 years are also dubbed Pappy 10 years. I see why people call it Pappy 10 years, even if that’s technically wrong.

Old Rip Van Winkle 10-Year Smell

Old Rip Van Winkle The 10 year welcomes me with juicy cherry, orange, burnt vanilla, and toasted oak in addition to honey that is dark, thick, and musty.

The spices cinnamon and clove are also detectable. Rich fruit and woody spices waft in a way that is aromatic without being overpowering. I might think I pick up a whiff of liquorice, but I know this is wheated. Most likely, it comes from clove and nuts rather than liquorice.

Although I’m not sure if this is blind, I can tell that when heated properly, the fragrances are rich and pleasant and reminiscent of fall. Dark honey, cherries, ripe peaches, oranges, fire-roasted marshmallows, and a deep background of cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg wood spices are all present in my nose. Then, a brooding oakiness comes through.

Although Old Rip Van Winkle 10 years may seem like a wheated Bourbon, it has lots of wood spices. However, it isn’t overly roasted or burnt. This is also what I find in Maker’s Mark Cask Strength. While I do smell a slice of fresh-baked bread, the young graininess is absent. This is another sign of maturity

Old Rip Van Winkle 10-Year Smell Taste & Aftertaste

I am greeted with honey, cherry, citrus, and dried apple. Followed by cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg. And last, toasted oak. There are distinct cherry, orange, and apple flavours. Plenty of wood spices impart flavour without being overwhelming.

The barrels were carefully chosen and blended to create a fantastic wheated Bourbon. Sweet flavours include honey, citrus, cherries, oak tannins, and malted grains. Typical aftertastes from chewing include honey, orange cherry, clove, and oak tannin.

About Old Rip Van Winkle

Julian Pappy Van Winkle Sr. began working for W.L. Weller & Sons Company in Louisville, Kentucky as a travelling salesman. Weller & Sons was a wholesale liquor distributor that supplied bourbon under a variety of labels, including Old Fitzgerald and Rebel Yell.

Despite the fact that other distilleries were forced to stop owing to Prohibition, Van Winkle secured a licence to run his distillery and make whisky for therapeutic purposes. Van Winkle, who died in 1966 at the age of 91, was America’s oldest still-active distiller.
