My first whiskey review will begin with my personal favorite bourbon, Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve 15 Years Old.
You may already be familiar with the history, hype, and almost unattainable status of this whiskey.
My first review of Making Pappy 15 years will tell you more about my bourbon preferences – I prefer sweeter and slightly woodier bourbons. While I love a strong rye mash bill I prefer the softer Wheated Bourbons.
This particular bourbon is sweet, soft, and smooth at 107 proof. It will probably last 15 years in a barrel, just like whiskey.
It isn’t too woody which I often notice when reading Van Winkle’s 23-year-old expression. It’s cliché, but it is true.
There are lots of butterscotch, vanilla, caramel, and vanilla in this recipe. Buffalo Trace’s staff really knows what they are doing.
It has just the right amount of burn. It isn’t too strong or too sharp. It’s almost perfect.
Okay, cost. The suggested retail price was $79. It was only $79. I paid slightly less than that, due to some good fortune. It is worth $79 If you can find it, yes.
There are many great whiskies under $25. But this one is special. This is a bourbon I only recommend for special occasions.
