History – John Deere Headquarters

In the mid-1950s, Deere & Company President William Hewitt faced pressure to relocate its headquarters from Moline, Illinois, to either New York or San Francisco. Although Hewitt resisted this idea, if Moline were to remain its permanent home, then an iconic new building for its head office would be necessary.

In 1956, Hewitt visited two buildings of particular note – the auditorium at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and General Motors Technical Center near Detroit, Michigan – which he decided to award their design work to Eero Saarinen from Deere & Company.

Hewitt insisted that while he desired a unique headquarters, it must also reflect the company and its employees. “The buildings should be modern in concept but should not give off an air of being particularly sophisticated or glossy – rather, they should appear more ‘down-to-earth’ and rugged,” he wrote.

Saarinen designed a complex of three buildings. The seven-story main office building rises from the floor of a wooded ravine and overlooks two ponds. A glass-enclosed bridge links this main structure to a product display building and a 350-seat auditorium.

Saarinen achieved Hewitt’s request that buildings appear grounded by using Cor-ten steel for the exterior structure. Cor-ten, which resists corrosion by forming an iron oxide coating, takes on an earthy hue as it ages, much like freshly plowed soil does. Originally developed for railroad track construction and other uses, this was the first time Cor-ten had been utilized in an architectural context.

On April 20, 1964, the new building, which initially housed around 900 employees, opened its doors for business.
