Academy Sports was founded by Arthur Gochman in ’38. In partnership, the two of them acquired Southern Sales, a used-goods retail chain with six locations.
For more than a year, the stores didn’t make any money. Even though Gochman worked as a lawyer and didn’t have any business training, he learned about disposal stores from his father, who had worked in the same business.
